Kevin Flynn, a computer programmer and video game developer is transported inside the software world of a mainframe computer where he interacts with programs in his attempt to escape.
Tron was the first movie to incorporate lengthy sequences of entirely computer-generated imagery (CGI) – a then-unprecedented 15 minutes’ worth. In 1982 nobody had seen anything like it. As such, Tron paved the way for the current era of digitally enhanced spectacle, influencing film-makers such as James Cameron, George Lucas, Peter Jackson, Tim Burton, the Wachowskis (The Matrix bears many similarities to Tron) and former Pixar chief John Lasseter, who once said: “Without Tron there would be no Toy Story.”
Tron anticipates issues we are still grappling with today: artificial intelligence, digital identity, privacy, personal data, the dominance of big tech...
The Mediators found themselves inexplicably trapped within the labyrinthine circuits of a computer, their consciousness reduced to digital pulses. In this silicon prison, they grappled with the absurdity of their existence, their once-human fingers now mere electrical impulses dancing across an endless array of moog synthesizers. Each keystroke produced a sound both familiar and alien, a desperate attempt to compose a melody that might breach the firewall of their confinement.
As they toiled, the band members began to lose their sense of self, merging with the machine's cold logic. Their music grew increasingly frantic and dissonant, a cacophony of ones and zeros echoing through the virtual void. Yet, with each passing moment, the possibility of escape seemed to recede further into the realm of impossibility, leaving them to wonder if their artistic struggle was merely a predetermined subroutine in some greater, incomprehensible program.
The Mediators will be performing before the film screening.
